How To Get To Nong Khiaw From Luang Prabang

You can get to Nong Khiaw from Luang Prabang by either bus, minivan or taxi. The rest of this post discusses these options in more detail.

There is no airport in Nong Khiaw and the closest airport is actually Luang Prabang International.

How To Get To Nong Khiaw By Bus

Travel Time: 4 hours

Cost: 40,000 Laotian Kip

One of the best and easiest ways to get to Nong Khiaw from Luang Prabang is by bus. 

There are a few different buses that go to Nong Khiaw from Luang Prabang. They are scheduled to leave Luang Prabang at either 9am, 11am or 2pm. Please note that the bus doesn’t always leave exactly on time. They often wait for more passengers to board and sometimes pick up extra passengers along the way.

The buses depart from the Northern Bus Station in Luang Prabang (see the map below) and arrive at Nong Khiaw Station. You can purchase your ticket at the bus station. It’s always a good idea to arrive early to ensure you have enough time to purchase your ticket.

Try to get a window seat if you can as you’ll see a lot of stunning scenery along the way! 

Top Tip: Ensure you go to the bathroom before boarding the bus as they generally don’t stop for toilet breaks.

How To Get To Nong Khiaw By Minivan

Travel Time: 3 hours

Cost: 55,000 Laotian Kip

An alternative to the bus would be to take a local minivan. These tend to be a bit more comfortable than the bus. The minivan only leaves Luang Prabang once a day at 9.30am. These tend to carry a maximum of between 10 and 12 people.

Please note that the minivan doesn’t always leave on time. They often wait for more passengers to board and sometimes pick up additional passengers along the way.

You can purchase this service at the Naluang Bus Station in Luang Prabang (see the map below).

It may be worth going to the station in advance to purchase your ticket as these services offer a pick up from your hotel. This can be particularly useful if you have heavy bags as it avoids having to carry them from your hotel to the bus station.

The minivan will arrive at Nong Khiaw Station.

Your hotel may offer to sort transport to Nong Khiaw for you. This could be a good option as it simplifies the process and avoids you having to travel to the bus station to purchase your ticket but it will cost more than going to the bus station yourself.

How To Get To Nong Khiaw By Taxi

Travel Time: 3 hours

Cost: ~ US $100

If budget isn’t a worry for you then you could hire a private taxi to get to Nong Khiaw from Luang Prabang. This will definitely be the most comfortable option however it is very pricey and won’t get you there much quicker than the minivan. 

Other advantages of taking a taxi is that you can stop whenever you want and you may wish to as the scenery along the way will be beautiful! You can stop for photos or for a toilet break (as the bus/minivans don’t usually stop for toilet breaks). 

Top Tip: if you’d prefer to travel by taxi but the price is a bit high, why not try to find another traveller in Luang Prabang to split the cost with? Luang Prabang is full of backpackers and many will be looking to visit the scenic town of Nong Khiaw.

Getting Around Nong Khiaw

Nong Khiaw is quite a small town so once you arrive you can probably just walk on foot to your destination. To get from one side of the town to the other will take no more than 30 minutes by foot. 

Most services will drop you off at Nong Khiaw Station which is on the edge of town on the western side of the river (see the map below). If you’d prefer not to walk, you can hop in a tuk-tuk and they’ll drop you off at your hotel for a small fee.
