The old town of Lagos is one of the best areas to stay in Lagos. This is where you’ll find the majority of restaurants, cafes, hotels and shops. This makes it a fantastic place to stay as it is so close to all the action.
It is also close by to the main attractions, being within walking distance to many of Lagos’s most famous beaches and sights. I have a post all about the top things to do in Lagos as well as a complete guide to the beaches of Lagos.
It is a very charming town filled with exquisite Portuguese architecture, outdoor restaurants, pedestrianised streets and ancient architecture. An old city wall surrounds part of the town, joining onto the Castle of Lagos. There is a lot of history to be explored in the old town.
It’s a great place to stay if you want to be close to the main attractions and close to the restaurants/bars. You can stay in the heart of the town itself, but it may be a little noisy especially in the evenings.
If you’d prefer something a little quieter, then you can stay a little further out where you’ll find some peace and quiet.
Downside: it can be a little noisy staying right in the centre of the town.
Hotel Recommendations in the Old Town:
A 4-star hotel with fantastic facilities, located just a 5 minute walk from the main amenities of the old town. They also offer a free shuttle bus to their private beach club on Meia Praia beach. Just a 3 minute walk to the ocean, this hotel offers rooms with incredible ocean views for a good price. It is also really close to the train & bus stations. This hotel is ideally located right in the heart of the old town so bars and restaurants are only a short walk away.
Marina de Lagos
Another one of the best places to stay in Lagos is by the marina. This has a more upmarket feel to it and is just away from the old town (just a 10 minute walk away). This allows you to get away from the hustle and bustle of the old town.
There are plenty of small restaurants, bars and cafes lining the marina. It’s a perfect place to just sit back and relax and watch the abundance of boats and yachts come in and out of the marina.
It is much quieter and more relaxing than the old town and feels much more fancy/upmarket. Another advantage is that it is really close (just 500m) to the Meia Praia beach which is the longest beach in Lagos.
Downside: this area could be a little quiet for those who are wanting a lively atmosphere. There is much less choice when it comes to restaurants and bars compared with the old town.
Hotel Recommendations in the Marina:
This hotel overlooks the marina, lined with palm trees. If that wasn’t enough, it also has a rooftop pool, air-conditioned rooms and free WiFi. This hotel is ideally located, being just a 10 minute walk from the main town centre.
Featuring modern studios and apartments, this hotel is by the marina and within walking distance of the main town centre. This hotel also features a spa and outdoor pool, perfect for relaxing.
With an outdoor pool that offers impressive views of the marina and sea, this hotel is a fantastic option. It has exceptional breakfast, free WiFi and air-conditioned rooms.
It is ideally located overlooking the marina and close to the main town centre. The facilities here are really impressive and the hotel has a modern feel to it.
Meia Praia is the longest beach in Lagos at around 4.5km. If you’re not sure where to stay in Lagos and know that you’ll want to spend a lot of time at the beach, then this could be the place for you.
This long beach stretches all the way along Lagos’s stunning coastline heading westwards. It is super spacious and offers enough room for everyone. You’ll never have to search for a space!
This is a real bonus as many of Lagos’s beaches are small and can get very crowded. Meia Praia is not overly developed, it’s main feature is wide stretches of golden sand and crystal clear waters.
It’s very beautiful and you will find small cafes, restaurants and bars offering refreshments along the beach.
If Meia Praia doesn’t sound like perfection to you then Lagos does have many other beaches, read about them in my Lagos beach guide! You can get a hotel right next to your favourite beach.
Downside: it is a little far from the old town so you may need to take a car/bus if you’re wanting to visit that area. There is less choice when it comes to restaurants and bars compared with the old town. It may feel a little quiet.
Hotel Recommendations in Meia Praia:
This 5-star hotel features luxurious rooms with beautiful views. It has spa facilities, an outdoor pool with incredible views and a restaurant terrace. The premium suites have private pools and ocean views. This hotel is less than a 5 minute walk to Meia Praia beach so is ideally located.
This is a 4-star luxury resort located on the seafront. You’ll get fantastic views and easy access to the Meia Praia beach. Featuring a spa and wellness centre, you can enjoy a relaxing massage or spend some time in the sauna. It also has an indoor & outdoor swimming pool, a kid’s club and 3 tennis courts.
Just 350 yards from Meia Praia beach, this hotel offers a sun terrace and impressive views of the sea. You can expect clean, modern rooms with free WiFi and an excellent breakfast, all at a good price.
Praia do Porto de Mós
This beach is the second largest in Lagos, after Meia Praia, and is located away from the main town. It’s a relaxing escape from the busy old town and is one of the best places to stay in Lagos if you’re after some peace and quiet. If you do want to head over to the old town, you can hop into a taxi and be there within 8 minutes.
One bonus is that it is right next to Ponta da Piedade which is one of Portugal’s most famous attractions. This collection of rock formations that have eroded over thousands of years to form sea arches, caves and grottoes is a must see if you’re visiting Lagos.

There are some fantastic hiking trails close by and lots of opportunities to take part in activities such as kayaking and paddleboarding.
Downside: it is very far from the main town of Lagos so you will need to take a car/bike to get there. This area is very quiet and there is not much choice when it comes to restaurants and bars as well as things to do.
Hotel Recommendations in Praia do Porto de Mós:
Located just 800 yards from Praia do Porto de Mós, this 4-star hotel is a fantastic place to stay. It has excellent amenities, including an outdoor swimming pool, garden, bar and barbeque facilities. Some rooms also offer sea views!
