General – When Is The Best Time To Travel To India?

December to March tends to be the best time to travel India in terms of weather. You can expect it to be warm during the days and cool during the evenings. Due to this, it is also peak tourist season so that is something to consider as it often means that prices are higher.

April to May is considered to be low season. It gets very hot during this time and can be almost unbearable in some places during the day so be wary if you’re thinking of travelling during these months.

June to November tends to be rainy/monsoon season in India so you can experience heavy rain and high humidity during these months.

March to May

Temperatures – Temperatures in Northern India at this time can range between 20ºC (68ºF) and 30ºC (86ºF) but it can get a little colder at night so bring something warm to wear in the evenings.

Weather – This is a great time of year to visit this area of India as it is warm in the day, up to 30ºC (86ºF) and cooler in the evenings. It is great compared to other times of the year when it can get much colder and rainy. It is also dry during this time.

Why you should visit during this time – This is a great time to visit Kashmir as the flowers are in bloom, especially if you are wanting to visit Mughal Gardens.

As this is the peak time to visit, it is generally the most expensive so prices may be higher than at other times of the year which is something to bear in mind.


June to September

Temperatures – The temperatures drop a little from June to September, reaching as low as 16ºC (60ºF) but it still remains hot and often reaches high temperatures of 25ºC (77ºF) and sometimes higher.

Weather – This period is classed as monsoon season so you can expect a lot of rain. It will also be very humid during this time.

Why you should visit during this time – This time of the year is considered to be off season so you can get some really cheap deals on hotels and activities. The rain can actually be quite cooling in the heat, so it’s not all bad! You’ll also find the main tourist sites a lot less busy so you can avoid the tourists during this time, but check the weather forecast as the rain may hamper your plans. October to November

Temperatures – The temperatures drop further by this time of year with lows of 9ºC (48ºF) and highs of around 20ºC (68ºF).

Weather – It is a little cold during this time of year but is much more bearable than the winter. It can get very cold during the night so bring a jacket!

Why you should visit during this time – It is a very beautiful time of year to visit Northern India as the trees turn a breathtaking shade of gold as autumn hits. This time of year is the harvest and you can even take part in apple-picking! Again, not that many tourists visit during this time so you may get some cheap deals on hotels and activities and the main tourist sites will be less busy than during peak season.


November to February

Temperatures – During the winter months, it can get very cold in the northern areas of India such as Kashmir with temperatures as low as 0ºC (32ºF) and not much higher than 15ºC (59ºF).

Weather – It does get pretty cold during these months and you can even see snow in some areas such as Srinagar. The rain by now will have subsided.

Why you should visit during this time – The winter can be a great time to visit this area as not many tourists visit Kashmir and the north during this time due to the cold temperatures, however it can be an enchanting time to visit if you enjoy the snow and don’t mind the cold. It will be a lot less busy too.

You can also take part in winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding and the snow-capped mountains are an incredible sight to see so it could be worth a trip during the winter. Although, some activities that are available during the rest of the year may not be feasible during winter such as visiting the Mughal Gardens.


The Golden Triangle

March to May

Temperatures – It is vey hot during these months and May is actually the hottest month in this area, sometimes exceeding 40ºC (104ºF) and even reaching 45ºC (113ºF) at times. It doesn’t get much lower than 25ºC (77ºC) even at night.

Weather – The weather is very dry and very hot during this time. You also need to be wary of heat stroke due to the high temperatures. Some shops even close down during the afternoons due to the heat and many activities don’t begin until after sundown so bear this in mind when booking a trip at this time of year.

Why you should visit during this time – There are some festivals hosted during the summer months that can be exciting to visit. This includes the International Mango Festival, where you can try and taste over 500 different types of mangoes! Holi is also celebrated in March – it gives a great taste of Indian culture and is so bright and colourful.


June to September

Temperatures – It is still really hot during this time with temperatures reaching over 40ºC (104ºF) and not much lower than 25ºC (77ºC) even at night.

Weather – This time of year is monsoon season so it can get very wet and rainy. Expect bursts of torrential rain and even flooding. Something to note is that the rain tends to come in short bursts so it doesn’t always ruin plans completely.

Why you should visit during this time – Due to the rain, it will be a lot less busy at the main tourist sites so if you’re heading to the Taj Mahal, you’ll find a lot less tourists however it may not look its best in the pouring rain. This can be an advantage if you don’t mind the rain as during peak season the Taj Mahal can be immensely busy.


October to February

Temperatures – The winter months tend to be the best time to visit this area of India as the average temperatures fall to a much more comfortable level. You can expect lows of around 22ºC (71ºF) and highs of 30ºC (86ºC) during the day, falling lower in the night. December and January can be a bit colder.

Weather – This time of year is a lot more bearable and you can expect it to be dry with warm days and cool evenings. It is the best time to visit the major sites such as the Taj Mahal.

Why you should visit during this time – It is the most bearable time of year and perfect for seeing the major sites. It can be more busy than other times of the year so bear this in mind. The Hindu festival of Diwali is also celebrated in November and is something not to miss!


Mumbai and The West

Weather – It is very hot and very dry during this time of year. The evenings tend to be the best time to head out as it becomes a little cooler. It is often too hot to go out at midday.

Why you should visit during this time – Many tourists avoid Mumbai and the west during this time due to the intense heat. However, if you’re on a budget you can get some really cheap hotel deals and opt to explore later in the evening or early morning.


July to September

Temperatures – Around this time of year, the temperatures begin to fall a little but remain high between 20ºC (68ºF) and 30ºC (86ºF).

Weather – This time of year is monsoon season so it can be pretty wet and you will experience plenty of rainfall. It is also really humid at this time. July and August tend to see the most rain, with the rainfall coming in short bursts.

Why you should visit during this time – It is a little cooler during this time so can be more comfortable to travel around the city however sightseeing may be a problem due to the rain. It can be a good time to take weekend getaways if you’re planning on visiting. The city of Mumbai continues whatever the weather so you may get better deals on hotels and most activities still run (you just may get a bit wet).


October to February

Temperatures – It gets a lot cooler during the winter months in Mumbai and the west reaching lows of 18ºC (64ºF) but it can still reach highs of around 35ºC (95ºF).

Weather – This is the best time of year to visit Mumbai and the west as it is dry and the temperatures are a lot more comfortable. The days are cool and perfect for sightseeing and exploring.

Why you should visit during this time – It is the most comfortable time of year to visit and a lot of cultural events take place during this time such as the Hindu festival of Diwali in November.

It is peak travel season for tourists so can be more busy and hotels may be more pricey.


Kolkata & North Eastern India

Weather – As well as being extremely hot, it is also really humid during this period. The heat can make sightseeing and exploring difficult and unbearable at times.

Why you should visit during this time – This time of year is not the most popular with tourists due to the scorching heat meaning you can get really cheap hotel prices at this time so its great if you’re on a budget. It tends to be better to head our in the early mornings or evenings to avoid the hottest points of the day.


June to September

Temperatures – It is still hot during this time of year with temperatures averaging between 27ºC (80ºF) and 35ºC (95ºC).

Weather – This time of year is monsoon season in Kolkata and north eastern India so you can expect heavy showers and high humidity. August tends to be the wettest month.

Why you should visit during this time – Due to the heavy rain, this time of year is less popular with tourists so you can get some great deals on hotels if you’re on a budget. September tends to be a bit drier and is more comfortable to travel.


October to February

Temperatures – It is a lot cooler at this time of year, you can expect temperatures averaging 15ºC (59ºF) to 29ºC (84ºF), even dropping to 10ºC (50ºF) at night. January and February are the coldest months.

Weather – This is the best time of year to visit Kolkata and north eastern India as the weather is most pleasant. The weather is warm, comfortable and dry which is great for exploring.

Why you should visit during this time – As well as the comfortable temperatures and weather, a lot of festivals occur at this time of year. Durga Puja is pretty big in Kolkata and the city really comes alive. The Hindu festival of Diwali is in November and is another great time to visit. It is the most popular time of year to visit so expect prices to be slightly higher.


South India

Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Chennai, Bengaluru, Goa

March to June

Temperatures – This is the hottest time of year in South India and temperatures can rise to 35ºC (95ºF) on the coast, with some inland areas reaching even higher temperatures.

Weather – At this time of year you can expect long days of sunshine and humid air. It does get pretty hot but is still bearable. Something to note is that it can get pretty windy by the coast so may be best to avoid coastal areas at this time.

Why you should visit during this time – It’s the perfect time of year to see the elephants as they tend to be out by the waterfront in places such as Periyar National Park in Kerala. As it isn’t the most busiest time of the year, hotel prices are still reasonable and although it is really hot, it’s manageable.


July to September

Temperatures – It is still pretty hot at this time of year with temperatures ranging between 24ºC (75ºF) and 30ºC (86ºF).

Weather – This time of year is rainy season so expect a lot of rainfall. In Kerala the rain peaks in June, July and August. The beaches can get a bit wild at this time too with choppy waters. The rain extends to November in the area of Tamil Nadu.

Why you should visit during this time – Some major festivals fall during this time such as the Onam of Kerala (an annual harvest festival) and Rath Yatra (which features public processions in bright chariots). October to February

Temperatures – The temperatures drop at this time of year making it much more pleasant. Temperatures vary a lot and can be anywhere between 12ºC (53ºF) and 30ºC (86ºF). Hill stations in these areas such as Ooty in Tamil Nadu can reach even colder temperatures, going down to 5ºC (41ºF).

Weather – There is very little rain at this time of year (apart from Tamil Nadu which experiences rain until November). It tends to be cool and dry making it the most popular time to visit.

Why you should visit during this time – It is the most comfortable time to travel and all tourist attractions are open during this time. Tourists continue to frequent popular beaches in places like Goa enjoying activities such as water sports. The end of February tends to be the most popular and busiest time. Diwali is also celebrated in November and is really popular in the South.
